When pulp mills make pulp and paper, they have to make the wood 'soft' first by taking out the resin or sap from the wood. This is called Lignosulphonate or 'Ligno' for short. Availability is becoming less common but it is still used widely as a dust suppressant on graveled surfaces. It is the Environmental Alternative to Dust Control in Canada, and slowly gaining in popularity.

It is shipped in a concentrate form but diluted with water before spraying to help it spray properly and penetrate the ground surface better. After the Ligno application, the water portion quickly evaporates, leaving the thick wood resin to glue the gravel together and viola......no dust! It dries to a hardened surface and traffic can drive on it within half an hour.
